Reliance Industries is charting an ambitious new course beyond telecom and retail, building a powerful RIL AI ecosystem while setting its sights on space-based connectivity. At its 49th Annual General Meeting, Chairman Mukesh Ambani laid out a vision that positions Reliance not just as India’s largest conglomerate, but as the backbone of the country’s digital and technological selfreliance in the years ahead.
Reliance Intelligence: Building a Sovereign AI Backbone
A central pillar of this strategy is RIL Intelligence, the group’s newly launched initiative to build a sovereign AI ecosystem for India. Speaking at the AGM Ambani explained that this project is designed to solve one of the country’s biggest bottlenecks in AI adoption: the scarcity and high cost of computing infrastructure. The company is constructing a massive AI backbone in Jamnagar, powered entirely by clean energy drawn from Reliance’s renewable energy platform in Kutch. The first phase, comprising 120 MW of AI infrastructure, is expected to go live by the end of 2026, with an initial fleet of advanced Nvidia GB300 GPUs delivering compute capacity equivalent to more than 75,000 H100 GPUs. Over time, RIL expects the Jamnagar facility to scale up to more than 200,000 H100equivalent GPUs, making it one of the largest AI compute hubs in the country.
This sovereign AI push isn’t limited to backend infrastructure. Reliance is rolling out a suite of multilingual AI services accessible in 22 Indian languages, including JioBharatIQ, AI Vyapar, JioHealthIQ, JioLearnIQ and JioKrishiIQ, aimed at bringing AI-powered tools to everyday users across sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and small business.Partnerships with global technology leaders like Google, Meta and Nvidia further strengthen this AI ecosystem, giving Indian users access to tools like Google’s Gemini and Meta’s open-source Llama models tailored for local enterprises.
Jio’s Satellite Ambitions: Connecting India From the Skies
Alongside its AI push, Reliance is making a bold move into space-based connectivity. Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, announced that the company is evaluating the development of a sovereign low-Earthorbit satellite constellation for India. The goal is to extend reliable internet connectivity to remote villages, island communities, and border outposts that remain out of reach for conventional terrestrial telecom networks regions where laying fibre or building towers simply isn’t practical.

According to industry reports, RIL plans could eventually involve a constellation of around 1,650 LEO satellites, capable of delivering satellite broadband as well as direct-to-device connectivity for regular smartphones operating beyond terrestrial network coverage. The estimated investment for this ambitious rollout ranges between $10 billion and $15 billion, with Ambani hoping to have the network
A Broader Vision for Technological Self-Reliance
Together, these initiatives reflect RIL broader ambition to reduce India’s dependence on foreign technology infrastructure, whether in computing power or space-based communications. Backed by a record-breaking FY26 performance consolidated revenue of ₹11.76 trillion and cumulative five-year capital expenditure of ₹6.48 trillion RIL clearly has the financial muscle to pursue both fronts simultaneously. If executed successfully, this dual push into sovereign AI and satellite connectivity could reshape not just Reliance’s own growth trajectory, but India’s standing as a global technology power in the years to come.

The Road Ahead
Execution of course will be the real test. Building a sovereign AI backbone at scale requires sustained investment in chips, energy, and while a nationwide satellite constellation involves complex regulatory approvals, spectrum allocation, and years of infrastructure development. Yet with the Jio IPO set to unlock fresh capital and strong AGM commitments already in place, RIL appears well positioned to turn these announcements into tangible, on-ground reality over the coming years.
