Thailand is changing the rules for Indian tourists travelling under its visa-exemption programme, with new requirements taking effect from September 15, 2026.

Under the revised arrangement, Indian ordinary passport holders travelling to Thailand for tourism will be able to enter without obtaining a visa in advance and stay for up to 30 days. However, travellers will need to meet several conditions and carry supporting documents when they arrive at Thai immigration.

The changes are part of Thailand’s wider review of its visa-exemption and Visa on Arrival arrangements. The Thai government said the revised system is intended to improve screening, reduce overlapping visa privileges and ensure that visa-free entry is used for its intended purposes.

What Indian tourists need to carry

Indian travellers using the visa exemption should be prepared to show a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival.

They should also have a confirmed return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation such as a hotel booking, and a clear travel plan or itinerary.

Thai authorities have also specified a financial requirement. Travellers using the visa exemption are advised to carry at least THB 20,000 in cash per passenger. Importantly, the requirement applies individually, meaning people travelling as a group should be prepared to meet the documentation and financial requirements separately.

Having the documents ready could become particularly important because meeting the visa-exemption criteria does not automatically guarantee entry. Immigration officers retain the authority to check documents and assess whether a traveller meets the conditions for admission.

Thailand Digital Arrival Card is mandatory

Another important requirement is the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC).

Travellers must complete the digital arrival card within 72 hours before arriving in Thailand through the official system. The TDAC is an arrival-registration requirement, not a visa, and it does not replace the visa-exemption conditions.

Tourists should therefore avoid treating the visa-free facility as a completely paperwork-free journey. While no tourist visa is required in advance for eligible Indian passport holders, immigration and arrival documentation still needs to be completed.

The stay is now limited to 30 days

The biggest policy change for Indian travellers is the reduction from the previous 60-day visa-exemption arrangement to 30 days.

Thailand’s revised measures withdraw the 60-day exemption and establish a 30-day tourism exemption for eligible countries, with India included in the new arrangement. The revised rules were published in the Royal Gazette on August 31 and take effect on September 15.

Indian tourists planning longer stays will therefore need to consider an appropriate visa rather than relying on the visa-exemption facility.

The Thai Embassy in New Delhi has previously advised Indian passport holders who want to stay longer than the permitted visa-exempt period to apply for the appropriate Thai e-Visa.

Not meant for employment

The visa-exemption facility is intended for eligible tourism travel. Indian nationals who have received a job offer in Thailand should not use the tourism exemption to enter for employment.

Similarly, travellers visiting Thailand for purposes outside the permitted tourism category should obtain the appropriate visa before travelling.

Passengers merely transiting through Thailand should also make sure they possess the documents and visas required for their final destination, where applicable.

Why Thailand is changing the rules

Thailand has described the wider visa-policy revision as a response to several considerations, including national security, tourism and economic interests, reciprocity and the need to simplify overlapping visa categories.

The government has also adopted the principle of one country, one entitlement, meaning each country or territory should have a single applicable visa-exemption category rather than multiple overlapping arrangements.

For Indian tourists, the result is a system that remains relatively convenient but comes with clearer entry conditions.

What travellers should check before flying

For an Indian tourist planning a Thailand trip after September 15, the basic checklist is straightforward:

  • Valid Indian passport with at least six months’ validity
  • Confirmed return or onward ticket
  • Confirmed accommodation
  • Clear travel itinerary
  • At least THB 20,000 in cash per traveller
  • Thailand Digital Arrival Card completed within 72 hours before arrival
  • Appropriate visa if the trip involves purposes or a stay not covered by the exemption

The changes do not mean Indians need to obtain a tourist visa before every short trip to Thailand. Instead, the country is moving to a 30-day visa-free tourism framework with specific entry conditions.

For travellers, the safest approach is to prepare the required documents before departure rather than assuming that a visa-free ticket means immigration checks will be minimal.

With Thailand remaining one of the most popular overseas destinations for Indian tourists, the new rules are likely to affect a large number of holidaymakers. Understanding the requirements before reaching the airport could help travellers avoid delays or problems at the immigration counter.

Disclaimer: Immigration rules can change and individual entry decisions are made by Thai authorities at the border. Travellers should verify the latest requirements with official Thai government or embassy sources before departure.
