BMW has given its flagship 7 Series sedan a major mid-life update in India, combining sharper styling, a more technology-focused cabin and upgraded powertrains. The refreshed luxury sedan has arrived alongside the updated all-electric i7, with prices starting at ₹1.95 crore (ex-showroom). At the top of the range sits the performance-oriented BMW i7 M70 xDrive, priced at ₹2.65 crore.

The latest 7 Series continues BMW’s push to make its flagship sedan as much about rear-seat luxury and digital technology as it is about driving performance. The new model also brings technology inspired by BMW’s newer-generation vehicles, giving the cabin a substantially more modern character.

BMW 7 Series: What’s new?

The facelift brings a revised front-end design featuring a more imposing kidney grille, updated lighting elements and redesigned bumpers. The illuminated Iconic Glow grille remains one of the sedan’s key visual highlights, while new wheel designs add to its premium appearance.

However, the biggest changes are inside the cabin.

BMW has redesigned the dashboard around a large 17.9-inch central touchscreen, complemented by a 14.6-inch display for the front passenger. The car also gets BMW’s full-width Panoramic Vision display, bringing key driving and navigation information into the driver’s field of view. BMW Operating System X and over-the-air software updates further strengthen the sedan’s digital capabilities.

For rear passengers, the 7 Series continues to focus heavily on comfort and entertainment. Buyers can opt for a huge 31.3-inch 8K Theatre Screen, transforming the back seat into something closer to a private cinema. BMW also offers Executive Lounge seating, massage functions, ventilation and powered leg rests for an even more chauffeur-oriented experience.

The luxury experience is further enhanced by features such as a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, ambient lighting, connected-car services and powered doors.

More power from the petrol 7 Series

The India-spec BMW 7 Series is now offered in the 740 M Sport configuration. It uses a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

The engine produces 400 bhp and 540 Nm, with claiming a 0-100 kmph acceleration time of 5.4 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 kmph. The updated powertrain represents an increase over the outgoing model, while the sedan continues to use an eight-speed automatic transmission.

BMW has also retained features aimed at balancing comfort with handling, including adaptive suspension and rear-wheel steering.

Notably, the diesel-powered 740d is no longer part of the India lineup with this update.

i7 brings electric luxury into the spotlight

Alongside the petrol-powered 7 Series, BMW has launched the updated i7 in India.

The BMW i7 eDrive50 xDrive M Sport is priced at ₹1.95 crore and uses a 112.5kWh battery. It produces around 455 hp and offers a claimed WLTP range of up to 728 km. BMW says the model can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in approximately 5.5 seconds.

The range-topping i7 M70 xDrive takes performance to another level. Its dual-motor setup produces up to 680 hp, while torque can rise to 1,100 Nm with Sport Boost. BMW claims a 0-100 kmph time of just 3.8 seconds, despite the car’s large luxury-sedan proportions. Its claimed WLTP range stands at 686 km.

Both electric variants support DC fast charging at up to 250kW, with claiming a 10-80% charging time of around 28 minutes.

India becomes an important production hub

One of the biggest developments accompanying the launch is BMW’s decision to locally assemble the i7 at its Chennai facility. The petrol 7 Series and i7 eDrive50 are also locally assembled, while the high-performance i7 M70 xDrive continues to arrive as a completely built-up unit.

This gives India a more important role in BMW’s global electric-vehicle production strategy while potentially helping the company maintain competitive pricing for locally assembled variants.

Price and competition

The refreshed BMW 7 Series 740 is priced at ₹1.95 crore, while the i7 eDrive50 carries the same starting price. The range-topping i7 M70 xDrive costs ₹2.65 crore, with all prices being ex-showroom.

At these prices, BMW’s flagship continues to compete with ultra-luxury sedans such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and other premium electric and combustion-powered executive cars.

With its combination of a more powerful petrol engine, longer-range electric options, a cinema-sized rear display and a substantially more digital cabin, the refreshed 7 Series is clearly aimed at buyers who expect their flagship luxury sedan to function as both a performance car and a private lounge.

For BMW, the update is more than a cosmetic facelift. It is an attempt to keep the 7 Series technologically relevant as the luxury-car market rapidly shifts toward electrification, software and increasingly sophisticated rear-seat experiences.
